The Gap Problem at Beecroft Railway Station Following complaints from some of our elderly residents, your Trust has written to our State MP, Greg Smith to highlight the problem of the gap that exists at various points along Beecroft Station. The issue of the gap and also the step height varies between the models of trains. Mr Smith wrote to David Campell, Minister For Transport on 7th February and we will keep our residents informed of any progress of this issue. Tree lined streets for Beecroft and Cheltenham Most residents will be aware of the initiative proposed by Councillor Bruce Mills of Hornsby Shire Council to transform more of the streets in Hornsby Shire into tree-lined boulevards. The Trust supported this initiative and is pleased to announce that Council recently approved a three year trial. The selected trees will be species that are suitable in terms of height, traffic line of sight, presence of overhead power cables etc. The ultimate protection for concerned residents who do not want the trees is that the initiative is predicated as only to plant in streets where residents have communicated a desire to have the trees. The Trust notes studies in Canberra carried out last year, when the ACT Government commissioned a detailed study by the Australian National University on the value of trees in Canberra's streets, parks and reserves. The ANU researchers estimated the 2008 value of ecosystem services provided by Canberra's 26 million square metres of street canopy to be $23.5 million - $6 million saved annually in energy and air conditioning costs, $12 million in pollution reduction, and $5 million in stormwater mitigation and reduced infrastructure costs. The Trust is requesting that interested residents speak to their neighbours about the initiative and if the street reaches a consensus, then nominate your street to be part of the program once the motion is passed. If you would like further details or if you would like to nominate your street please email Stuart Pittendrigh on pittendrigh@ozemail.com.au |
