The Bushland subcommittee is a small informal committee which focuses on the welfare of our local bushland and the habitat values of Beecroft and Cheltenhams' residential area. Some of the first members of the Civic Trust formed this subcommittee in 1964. The current convenor is Ross Walker and the members are Eva Jones, Brian Sippel, Jenifer Lewis, Paulette DeMartin and Sheila Woods.
The subcommittee meets once a month on the 1st Monday of the month to discuss issues relating to bushland in Beecroft and Cheltenham. This includes all the reserves managed by Council and areas of Lane Cove National Park.
Objectives include:
GETTING TO KNOW OUR BUSH:
To help new and old residents enjoy our local bushland and find out more about it, the subcommittee conducts two guided walks a year one in autumn and one in spring. All are welcome to attend our walks which are usually also attended by local botanists, bushcarers and historians who are happy to share their knowledge.
EDUCATION:
To educate residents about ways to protect bushland. We can all make a difference:
- Learn about weeds that cause problems in bushland and the best techniques to remove them from your garden.
- Plant more local native species in your garden to increase habitat for local wildlife.
- Use your green waste bin for all your garden waste (never put it in the bush).
- Join other local residents in a Bushcare group to help restore and protect your local bushland. A number of Bushcare Groups work regularly in Beecroft and Cheltenham.
LIAISON WITH THE MANAGERS OF THE LOCAL BUSHLAND:
- A member of the subcommittee is currently on Hornsby Council's Bushland Management Advisory committee.
- Members keep informed about Council initiatives such as the declaration of Wildlife Protection Areas in Beecroft and Cheltenham.
- Members of the subcommittee regularly walk and work in the local bushland and may contact Council and National Parks about any issues of concern.
